Leighton shocked his many loyal fans on the 19th July 2007 when he announced his retirement from the saddle. Hundreds of e-mails and letters came flooding into the fan club, many from owners, trainers and racing presenters who couldn't believe his decision to quit when he was probably at the peak of his profession and at the relatively young age of just 31:

FANTASTIC NEWS - came in April 2009 when Leighton decided come out of retirement and start racing again. He was missing the camaraderiue of his fellow jockeys in the changing room and the excitement of raceriding. Leighton's been really missed by his hundreds of loyal followers No doubt they'll be overjoyed with the news that Leighton is back - What a jockey!!!

When Leighton retired from the saddle he found work at John Dunlops Castle Stables in Arundel where he spent 18 month learning to become a trainer.
Leighton said " I'm grateful to Mr Dunlop. I worked at a great place with a great man and learned a lot, I enjoyed it, and see myself training one day. But I want to ride for as long as I am wanted and am able to".
After his first day back in the saddle Leighton said " Its great to be back but I had to get used to the speed factor after just schooling horses over the past year or so. It took me by suprise".
Leighton went on to say -"Six months before I retired I wasn't enjoying racing or going racing. I was losing my competitve edge. I wanted to get away. I managed to get a pupil assistant job with John Dunlop and ended up training. But towards the end of the year I began to miss race riding. I spoke to some of the trainer I used to ride for and the feed back was positive, so I dicided to come".
Leighton rode over 400 winner before he retired the highlight being 2 Welsh Nationals and Runner up in the Aintree Grand Nation.
Leighton is in great demand again from trainers who want their horses schooling, he's been busy schooling at Nick Giffords, Roger Teals, Lucy Wadham, Tim McCarthy, and Laura Mongon , He's even rode out a couple of 2 year olds for Peter Winkworth. - What a Jockey!!!
