SUPREME BID FOR PUFFIN BILLY:
Puffin Billy is likely to run in the William Hill Supreme Novices' Hurdle over two miles at the Cheltenham Festival if the ground remains on the soft side.

Trainer Oliver Sherwood had previously stated he was favouring the longer Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle for his unbeaten youngster, but the prevailing conditions have seen him have a change of heart.

Puffin Billy was entered last weekend in the race won by Rebecca Curtis' At Fishers Cross, but Sherwood decided to swerve it as he did not fancy running him over two miles and five furlongs for the first time in heavy ground.

"I was perturbed about running over that trip for the first time on very tiring ground," Sherwood told At The Races.

"If it had been two miles I would have taken those horses on but, as everyone knows, Billy can be quite keen over two miles.

"I was aware of him having a hard race quite close to the Festival. I was not scared of the opposition, I was impressed by them but I didn't want him having a hard race before March.

"He'll go to Exeter on Sunday week for a Listed hurdle over two-one. He's in A1 form and I'm very happy with him.

"He'll have entries in both races in March. I know I said I was swaying towards the Neptune but my gut feeling, if it's soft ground, (is) he'll almost certainly run in the Supreme and if it's drier than that, I might switch to the Neptune. I'm pretty certain we'll wait until closer to the race (before making a definite decision).

"I'm sure punters will understand six weeks is a long time between now and Cheltenham. My gut feeling is two miles at the moment if the ground stays as soft as it is."

ASPELL AND SHERWOOD STUNNED BY BAN:

Trainer Oliver Sherwood he feels like "packing it up" after after being fined £3,000 over the running and riding of Furrows in a beginners' chase at Hereford on Wednesday.

Leighton Aspell was hit with a 14-day ban (December 19-22, 26-31, January 1-4) while the horse was suspended from running for 40 days.

The local stewards felt that Furrows, a 20/1 chance, was tenderly handled in finishing fourth on his debut over fences behind Vulcanite, beaten a total of 11 and three-quarter lengths.

The stewards found Sherwood guilty of 'schooling and/or conditioning the horse on the racecourse'.
In his defence, the Upper Lambourn told the officials the horse had a history of leg problems, was an average jumper at home, and had suffered a nasty fall at Sandown earlier in his career.

He said: "I'm absolutely mortified. I've never been accused of anything in 27 years of training.

"I will be appealing, I don't know how you go about it. I've spoken to the NTF (National Trainers Federation).

"I know it didn't look particularly good. My number one priority is horse welfare. The horse nearly died last year at Sandown.

"It was his first run over fences. The number one [priority] was to get round in one piece.

"The owners are so shocked they want to pull out of racing now. They lost a horse at Hereford that got killed last year. I feel like packing it up."

Rachael Downey, the breeder of Furrows, was at the racecourse and also upset at the decision.

"He was a 20/1 chance and we were in the owners' room celebrating the fact that he had just got round safe," she told At The Races.

"To me he [Aspell] rode a brilliant race. We got a fourth against horses who were so [far] higher rated.

"I said to the stewards 'Where did you think he was going to come?'. He might have been third, but [in a seven-runner race] that wouldn't have made any difference to any punters.

"My question is does the punishment fit the crime? It's devastating. We lost his full-brother on this course in the same going last year and this was his first chase. This is my baby."

Leighton told the fan club he  is to appeal against the serveity of the ban.

SHERWOOD AND ASPELL FAIL IN APPEAL

13/12/12

Trainer Oliver Sherwood has had his appeal against a £3,000 fine over the running and riding of Furrows at Hereford on December 5 dismissed by the British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary panel.

Jockey Leighton Aspell was handed a 14-day ban after the race and his appeal has also been rejected, while the horse has been suspended from running for 40 days.

Sherwood and Aspell have 48 hours to appeal the disciplinary panel's decision and take the case to the appeal board.

The BHA Press Office tweeted: "Appeals of Oliver Sherwood and Leighton Aspell dismissed. Penalties stand. Sherwood and Aspell have 48 hours to appeal decisions."

The local stewards felt Furrows, sent off at 20-1, appeared to be tenderly handled when finishing fourth on his debut over fences behind Vulcanite in the bet365.com novices' chase, beaten 12 lengths.

They found Sherwood guilty of schooling/conditioning the horse on the racecourse. In his defence, the Upper Lambourn handler told the Hereford officials the horse had a history of leg problems, was an average jumper at home, and had suffered a nasty fall at Sandown earlier in his career.

The disciplinary panel found Aspell made no discernable effort to obtain the best possible placing or be seen to be doing so and it was a confidence booster.

Sherwood fully supported the ride and was therefore found in breach as well.

An angry Sherwood refused to comment when contacted, while an understandably disappointed Aspell said: "I've got nothing to say really."

JOHN DUNLOP TO RETIRE AT END OF SEASON

Image:

Awarded an OBE for his charitable work and responsible for over 3,500 winners, Dunlop told Press Association Sport: "I can confirm that I'll be retiring at the end of the current Flat turf season.

"There are several reasons behind the decision. I now have much reduced stable numbers and it is now less viable than it once was.

"My wife has also been ill for quite a while as well, so that has been a factor and I can also now live in the shadow of my very successful sons".

Josh GIfford dies. 9/2/12

Image:

Grand National-winning trainer Josh Gifford has died of a heart attack.

Gifford, who had only recently returned home from hospital after suffering from septicaemia, will forever be remembered for Aldaniti's stirring victory at Aintree in 1981 after his jockey Bob Champion recovered from cancer.

Gifford's son, Nick, who took over from his father at his Findon yard in West Sussex, confirmed the sad news.

"I'm afraid he passed away in the early hours," he said.

Before starting his training career, Gifford was an accomplished jockey and was crowned champion on four occasions.

He had four Cheltenham Festival successes and finished second in the 1967 Grand National on Honey End behind the legendary winner Foinavon.

Gifford had his first ride as a 12-year-old and his first winner came two years later in 1956 on Trentham Boy on the Flat. His first winner over jumps was at Wincanton in 1959.

As well as winning the National with Aldaniti, Gifford trained top-quality horses such as Door Latch, Deep Sensation, Bradbury Star and Katabatic.

He trained over 1,500 winners in his career.

TRAGIC END FOR VETERAN CHARM

Oliver Sherwood's crowd favourite Eric's Charm lost his life in the Blue Square Supporting Greatwood Veterans' Handicap Chase at Newbury.

The 13-year-old was the most venerable of the old stagers in the event and appeared to have broken a leg when unseating Leighton Aspell at the end of the back straight.

It was soon announced on the public address system he had been put down.

A charismatic white-faced chestnut, Eric's Charm won 12 of his 41 previous starts and was particularly effective around Sandown, finishing second in the 2006 renewal of the Bet365 Gold Cup and enjoying what was to be his swansong in the totesport Masters Handicap Chase at the Esher track last month.

Sherwood looked visibly shaken by his loss, while Peter Deal, who owned him in partnership with Martin St Quinton, said: "He was a complete star. It always seems to happen to the bravest horses and you just don't own one like him very often.

"He was a great stable favourite and a serious character. I think he ran for us for nine seasons and we were really hoping he could bow out at Sandown next month."
